Telcos in the country have reiterated their readiness to embrace Over-The-Top (OTT) calls to optimize their operations in the country.
Speaking at forum organized by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to discuss the topic of OTT calls, the Chief Executive Officer of the Telecoms Chamber, Kwaku Sakyi-Addo stated that there is no organization or company in Ghana advocating for a ban of OTT calls.
“The key point is there is no contemplating on the part of the NCA to ban OTT. Telcos recognize OTT as a moving train. Nobody is trying to stop a moving train,” he said.
He clarified that there has not been any conversation or initiation by any organization or telco to ban OTT.
According to him, telcos in the country have rather designed innovative products around OTT to optimize its usage in the country.
“Every time you go to Google or Facebook you are using OTT, the idea that this would be banned is utterly preposterous,” he said.
Mr. Sakyi Addo stressed that telcos in Ghana are committed to developing the country through ICT expansion and infrastructure development.
On his part, the Administrator of GIFEC, Mr. Kwabena Akyeampong stated that his outfit has been able to supply ICT equipment to the security services and some selected schools in the country to enhance education in information technology.
He pointed out that there are over 18 programmes designed by GIFEC to help folks in rural areas have access to the internet and ICT.
