The incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the opposition New Patriotic Patriotic (NPP), of scheming to disenfranchise its supporters in an attempt to win power at all cost in the November polls.
“The National Democratic Congress in the Ashanti Region has for sometime now been following certain leads and I can now authoritatively say that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its desperation to win power at all cost through the back door, has decided to disenfranchise as many NDC supporters as possible,” the deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho stated at a press conference in the Ashanti Region on Thursday.
Koku Anyidoho alleged that, the NPP is compiling what he called a “dubious list of supposed dead NDC supporters” [particularly in the Suame constituency] , which they intend to present to the Electoral Commission for such names to be deleted from the register.
“They are also trying to make a sensible case for a new voters’ register to be compiled so as to enable them load that register with minors here in the Ashanti region… ,“he added.
He believes the concerns the NPP has so far raised about the current register, is borne out of its desire to engage in “unacceptable and fraudulent conduct of forcing out names of persons who will not be able to participate in that so-called validation exercise they are talking about.”
Supporting his claims with what he called evidence, Anyidoho recalled that on April 11, two agents of the NPP in the Suame Constituency were busted by NDC youth for identifying names of some NDC supporters on the national voters’ register and marking them as dead.
“They claim to be democrats; yet they are the ones who do all the horrible things that makes democracy walks on its head. On the 11th of April, 2016, two NPP agents were busted by vigilant youth of the NDC in the Suame Constituency.
“The NPP agents were caught in the act of busily identifying NDC supporters on the national voters’ register and marking them as dead. They have the register, and they are identifying NDC people and they write dead by your name. Interestingly enough, the NPP tries to create the impression that it is only the NDC that it is in possession of hard copies of the voters’ register. Well, now there is evidence that the NPP has the voters’ register because when you apply for it the EC will make it public.”
