Police in the Ashanti Region have charged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Director in the region, Kwesi Kyei, for abetment and assault. This follows his alleged role in the attack on the party’s youth activist, Baah Acheamfour and some staff at Kumasi-based Fox FM, on Monday.
Baah Acheamfour is believed to have made some derogatory remarks against the party’s flagbearer and other party members, during a live political discussion in the studios of Fox FM as a panellist.
About six macho men, believed to be members of the NPP, stormed the station and beat him up in the studio together with other employees of the station.

“We arrested him on Tuesday. We released him on police enquiry bail to report today so we have rearrested him and we are charging him. He has denied sending the macho men there or calling the macho men to the place. He also told us he doesn’t know them from anywhere.”
Despite Mr. Kyie’s denials, the ASP Tanko indicated that the police have reason to believe he was involved in the assault hence the charge.
“We have to conduct our own investigations and if we have reason to believe that the person is involved then we have to go ahead and charge him and try to prove that to the court.”
GIBA condemns attack
Meanwhile the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has condemned the attack on Fox FM.
In a statement, GIBA called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to treat the incident as a criminal case and move to prosecute the offenders.
It is unclear how far the matter would go considering that such cases have often ended up being treated as internal party matter.
