The Ministry of Health has directed all Regions and Districts health offices to earmark isolation areas for the management of cholera cases to prevent an outbreak.
The directive was issued at the launch of a vigorous campaign aimed at ensuring that the nation does not face an outbreak of cholera as it did last year.
In the last two years, over 500 cases of Cholera have been recorded nationwide with about 100 deaths but only one case has been recorded with no fatality so far this year.
Launching the National Cholera Campaign on the theme, “regular hand washing is key to cholera prevention” the sector minister Alex Segbefia admonished the public to be weary of unhygienic surroundings.
He noted that the purpose of the campaign was to create awareness among the public on prevention of Cholera and urged citizens to engage in hygienic practices like washing hands under running water or stopping open deification or eating hot food.
Mr. Segbefia also said cholera alerts had been sent to all regions to kick start preventive measures to combat cholera.
“Cholera alerts have been sent to all regions, districts and health facilities to start preparedness activities. There are also enhanced diarrheic disease surveillance ongoing in the Greater Accra region, specifically in Adabraka, Korlebu, Mamprobi polyclinic can Ga South municipals.”
Whilst indicating that all regions and districts are being mandated to earmark isolation areas for the management of cholera cases, the Health Minster further revealed that the Health Ministry was targeting special areas for the construction of treatment centres.
“The ministry is building cholera treatment centers which are at varied levels of completion in the Ga south Municipal and La General Hospital, Adabraka and Mamprobi polyclinic,” Mr. Segbefia stated.
