Parliament has summoned the heads of Ghana’s various security agencies to an emergency meeting following terrorist attacks in neighboring West African countries.
A statement issued by government on Tuesday, also revealed that there are clear threats to Ghana’s security.
“The National Security Council on the basis of briefings by the intelligence agencies and partners has determined that there is a credible terrorists’ threat to all countries in the sub-region,” a statement issued by the Communications Ministry added.
Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defense and Interior, Fritz Baffour, said the meeting will enable the House assess the country’s present security status.
“Immediately we got wind of the situation in Ivory Coast, we intensified our efforts to get them to come and give us a briefing. We already put out an invitation and what we have to do is to find out the time that will be suitable for them…. Parliament cannot ensure your security. All that Parliament can do is to give support to the security services in terms of their request for logistics….”
National Security boosts counter terrorism measures
Meanwhile Ghana’s National Security Council has stepped up counter terrorism measures to protect Ghanaian lives and property.
A meeting which was chaired by President Mahama reviewed the nation’s anti-terrorism preparedness, joint services operations and other measures to ensure the safety of the citizenry.
In statement sent after the meeting yesterday the council further urged the public to report any unusual circumstances that may pose a threat to the nation’s security.
The crucial meeting which received briefings on the situation in the sub-region agreed that there is the need for the country to step up activities to prevent such attacks since the sub-region is under threat.
