National Democratic Congress (NDC) incumbent Member of Parliament MP for Shai Osu Doku, David Tetteh Assumeng, has announced he will not participate in the party’s primary to elect a new Parliamentary aspirant going into the November elections.
The incumbent MP’s decision is in solidarity with the party’s Parliamentary Candidate, Desmond William Ocloo, who was killed in a gory car crash near Juaso in the Ashanti Region last week.
Desmond William Ocloo won the party’s primary in November 2015, to become the Parliamentary Candidate in the Shai Osudoku Constituency for the 2016 general elections in November.
[contextly_sidebar id=”GQQhDAKo3ZMDauorAEaKmvnKjSRwCspO”]He triumphed over David Tetteh-Assumeng, who has been in Parliament since 2004.
Mr. Ocloo during the primary polled 4,350 votes while David Tetteh Assumeng had 1280.
Other aspirants in the race included the Director of the National Service Secretariat (NSS), Dr. Kpessah Whyte, who polled 3,189 votes, while Ebenezer Adzakli had 393.
His demise albeit sad, somewhat would have helped Tetteh-Assumeng who came 3rd in the first primary to be elected.
But speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday to contribute to the debate on President John Mahama’s 2016 State of the Nation Address, Mr. Tetteh-Assumeng announced his decision not to contest the party’s primary.
In a short contribution that lasted for less than five minutes, Mr Assumeng, said it was with a “heavy-heart” that he was on his feet to debate the President’s address “for the last time”.
His mood and the tone in which he spoke, reflected a broken man; first, perhaps, because of the tragic death of the man who beat him to the NDC ticket late last year, and second because he will not be a part of a new Parliament to be inaugurated on January 7, 2017.
