The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has asked Ghanaians to disregard a League Table which is making rounds on social media purportedly ranking Senior High Schools according to their performance in the 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to WAEC, the League Table did not emanate from its outfit, and, therefore, “should be disregarded”.
“Ghanaians should disregard the current league table circulating on social media,” the Head of National Office of WAEC, Very Rev. Dr Samuel Nii Nmai Ollennu, said in an interview.
The said League Table placed Pope John’s Minor Seminary and Senior High School (SHS) at the first position; Prempeh College, second; Wesley Girls’ SHS, third; Adisadel College, fourth; Presbyterian Boys SHS, fifth; Aburi Girls SHS, sixth; Ghana Secondary Technical School; seventh; St James Minor Seminary, eighth; Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS, ninth and Bishop Herman College, 10th.
Popular schools such as Mfantsipim and Achimota were placed 14th and 26th, respectively.
The table also placed Asanteman SHS, University Practice SHS and the Notre Dame Girls SHS at the 68th, 69th and 70th positions.
Very Rev. Dr Ollennu said the Council had stopped coming out with the League Table because of the controversy it generated.
He noted that irregularities and malpractices during examinations went up whenever the League Table was published.
“We realised that whenever the League Table is published, irregularities go up. This is because schools that find themselves at the bottom of the table try to use all means to come up. In the process, these irregularities go up,” he said.
“In Britain where the League Table is published, it resulted in the improvement in performance of the schools,” he said.
Checks at the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service also revealed that the table did not emanate from their end and that the document being circulated was not authentic.
“If WAEC said it did not publish the League Table, then it is not authentic because it is usually from WAEC that we at the GES get the actual performance of candidates in the WASSCE,” the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Mr Francis Gbadago, added.
