President John Dramani Mahama says he does not want to be addressed with the honorary title doctor, despite receiving an honorary doctorate degree from Aberdeen University, one of the most recognized institutions in the world.
The President in a Twitter post on Saturday March 19, asked to be referred to as Mr. Mahama instead of Dr. Mahama.
He however thanked the University for the honor done him, and also thanked those who wished him well and congratulated him.
The University of Aberdeen conferred the honorary doctorate of Doctor of Laws (LLD) on President Mahama earlier this week, at a special convocation which took place at the university’s Kings College in Scotland.
The President was accompanied by the First Lady, Lordina Dramani Mahama, Foreign Minister Hanna S. Tetteh (MP), Communications Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Education Minister Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman.
What’s the President’s motive?
It is unclear the motive for the president’s posture; but the tweet, which is receiving reactions on social media, has been described as an attempt by the President to portray himself as humble.
Others also believe that his act is commendable and magnanimous, and indeed portrays him as a down to earth person.
Some critics say the President’s response is inappropriate and smacks of disrespect or a lack of appreciation to the institution that honored him.
