The Parliamentary Select Committee on Water Resources, Works and Housing, has summoned the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to appear before it on Thursday, over the water crisis in Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region.
This follows a visit by the MPs to the area on Tuesday to assess the situation.
[contextly_sidebar id=”WYlvvwznzSmQrBtiTyeBcHIlMapzQBvz”]The committee members say they were appalled by Ghana Water Company’s efforts to resolve the crisis especially at the Nsawam treatment plant.
The tour of the facility resulted in heated exchanges between MPs and the managers of the plant.
In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Chairman of the Committee and MP for Shai Osudoku David Tetteh Asumeng, said the meeting with officials from the GWCL will determine the next line of action.
“We are summoning the company to meet the Committee on Thursday so we can see the way forward,” he added.
He argued that a number of agencies including the Water Resources Commission were supposed to advise the company “on the trend of the life of water.”
“…So we thought that those organizations could collaborate to ascertain the life of the water but that collaboration was not done. So we were also upset that there wasn’t enough advice from the Water Resources Commission,” he added.
David Tetteh Asumeng explained that they have approved huge budgetary allocation to the sector, lamenting that, “people are being paid, people have taken money so they must be held responsible for their actions and inaction.”
For over a month, residents in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality have been without potable drinking water, compelling them to rely on polluted water sources for domestic activities.
