Government through the National Security Council has established what it calls the National Emergency Command Centre aimed at addressing various security challenges and emergencies.
This comes in the wake of the June 3, 2015 fire and flood disaster that killed nearly 150 people.
The severity of casualties recorded during such emergencies have largely been blamed on the lack of effective national emergency response system.
Currently, the National Emergency Command Centre which seeks to integrate the operations of the various security services and agencies, is on a pilot basis in Accra.
The facility will use information communication technology systems to monitor areas in Accra to facilitate early detection and response to any incident.
The facility uses mobile technology, video and other medium to ensure that information is transferred on time to the Command Centre for swift action.
It will also be used to identify and deal with hotpots in the country before, during and after this year’s election.
Briefing the media after President John Mahama paid a visit to the facility to familiarize himself with the place, Lead Consultant, Kofi Worlanyo, said “these are facilities that are being developed to help public safety, public security and facilitate fast access to emergency link when the need arises.”
“We have built a 4G network which forms the platform on which various intelligent cameras operate. We have integrated video systems which enables us monitor places of interests that are based on different defined threats and those videos are fed back to our data centre here, and at the data centre we have enough storage and processing power to asses what the threats are and at the command centre we can look at it as a call centre for the security agencies. “
He further revealed that the Police Service will develop the processes that enable them respond to various threats accordingly and make sure that they ensure the safety of Ghanaians.
