A Former Minister of Education under the Kufuor administration, Prof. Dominic Kwaku Fobih, wants the Ghana Education Service (GES), to audit documents submitted by teachers to support their claims about fake certificates.
The GES says the payment of salary arrears for some category of teachers delayed because most of them submitted fake documents and certificates to support their claims.
[contextly_sidebar id=”ll0pKb5rq81OSufofrkLpRDT07ZCcD9g”]It said out of 14,575 input forms that were initially submitted by teachers for processing and payment, only 6,268 were found to be attached with genuine supporting documents.
Meanwhile the teacher unions, namely; the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have threatened to lay down their tools by the end of February if their arrears are not paid.
Prof. Fobih who is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, made these comments while on a familiarization tour of the Zenith University College on Monday.
He insisted in a Citi News interview that government must show goodwill to avert the strike.
“If indeed government owes them, it must pay them or they must sit down, discuss and forge a way forward than just each side taking an entrenched position that will not solve the problem.”
On the issue of alleged fake documents, Prof. Fobih charged the GES to prove the claim “beyond all doubt so that every side will be satisfied. So government should give the indication that they are prepared to look into the matter and those found to be fraudulent they will not pay them; but those that are genuine and have delayed, they will make arrangements to pay them. If this understanding is reached, I think there will not be any deadline being given by the teachers,” he added.
BNI to pick up over 400 ‘fake teachers
According to the Director General of GES, Jacob Kor, more than 400 teachers who have been identified to be teaching with fake certificates, will soon be handed over to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
”Ghana Education Service mounted a crusade to weed out the fake certificates and as we speak we have gotten some fake certificates totaling over 400. In one district, we even have over 200 before the other distributions and they are still even coming in,” Jacob Kor noted.
