The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Professor Emmanuel Martey has charged the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei to be slow to comment publicly on concerns raised by pro political groups over the impending general elections.
Prof. Martey’s comments come on the back of concerns raised by some pressure groups over the loyalty of some members of the National Election Steering Committee.
The Presbyterian moderator believes it is needless for the EC Chairperson to hastily answer every question raised about the electoral process.
[contextly_sidebar id=”UUYHDbjle4MyuFqCTDnSrFaMcQ49XBpZ”]“The chairperson of the Electoral Commission… talks too much. She must work behind the scenes, she should not come and answer all queries; she should really minimize her mistakes. This is very important,” he said.
He further reprimanded the Commission for not investigating the background of the members of the committee before appointing them.
“You cannot appoint a committee without a thorough search on their background.”
Some pro-opposition groups, including Let My Vote Count and Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) had accused Joseph Whittal, Deputy Commissioner at CHRAJ, Dr. Karl Max Arhin, a Deputy Director of International Affairs of being card holding members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on the development, Prof. Martey emphasized the need for her to scrutinize members who are suggested onto any election committee before accepting them.
Talking too much where?
The EC boss has mostly addressed issues concerning the elections at press conferences and other organized fora.
She however earlier this year, appeared on Joy FM on a programme to address some issues raised by some pro-New Patriotic Party pressure groups over their demands for the creation of a new voters’ register.
Too many mistakes
The Presby Moderator has also charged the EC Chair to reduce the mistakes in the electoral process and conduct due diligence before accepting any member to serve on the Election Steering Committee.
