A branch of Organised Labour , Union of Informal Workers Association (UNIWA) has indicated that workers of both the informal and formal sector will embark on strikes and demonstrations until their demands are met.
“We will continue to demonstrate, we will continue agitate, we will continue to strike until our requests are granted. We are not moved by anything,” the Secretary of UNIWA, Deborah Freeman said.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Aq6e4cxbpg8lSFSFeWWnxNlVNRRmBJQA”]UNIWA and other unions under Organised Labour will stage a nationwide demonstration that is expected to mount pressure on government to reduce what they have termed astronomical increases in taxes and fuel prices.
Speaking on Point Blank segment of Eyewitness News, the Secretary of UNIWA, Deborah Freeman said members of UNIWA are unable to pay taxes due to the harsh economic conditions.
“UNIWA members want to pay taxes. The environment does not favour them.“We as leadership don’t have to sit aloof for these things to happen because members complain a lot. We do not endorse everything about the new taxes and levies. We agree that there should be some agreement but it should not go beyond 20%,” she said.
She indicated that Organised Labour will embark on its demonstration today after which they will start negotiating with government.
“The demonstration hold tomorrow, we will hit the streets tomorrow and after that we hope to also negotatie with government.”
The demonstration will be followed by a two-day strike.
