The announcement of an upward review of transport fares has been rescheduled to next week in anticipation of an increase in road tolls.
The various transport unions met with officials of the Ministry of Transport on Thursday in an attempt to review the transport fares after the prices of petrol and diesel went up by between 22% and 27%.

“The Transport Fare Review Committee met today with all the transport operators and we have resolved that since we are expecting a certain change in certain quarters, we will hold on for a week. We are anticipating that Road Tolls are about to be increased,” he said.
He pleaded with commercial drivers to be patient and give the various stakeholders sometime to review the fares.
“We are telling our drivers to still bare with us because we are working for them. I know buying at the current rate is affecting their income but it is better for us to wait and increase it once than to do another review after the tolls are increased,” he said.
Meanwhile a statement jointly signed by leadership of the GPRTU and GRTCC urged transport operators “to kindly maintain the current fares until further notice.”
“It is the policy of the Transport Fares Review Committee to review transport fares bi-annually i.e. January and June every year. This will enable other components that go into the running of commercial road transport services to be taken into consideration. After the Committee’s first meeting on Thursday 7th January, 2016, it has been agreed to meet again on Thursday 14th January, 2016 by which time any decision agreed upon would be communicated to all transport operators and the general public.” the statement added.
