The Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has called off its week old strike.
The strike was called off on Friday following a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and Vice Chancellors Ghana, last Thursday.
Speaking to Citi News, the National Chairman of TEWU Peter Lumor, said all its members have been directed to resume work while Negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission continues.
[contextly_sidebar id=”7p8TwOtF9CamJgttlVWuwxnf6trDEtVl”]“We had to call off the strike because fair wages was not responding to VCG’s letter, they were not responding to concerns for us to sit and negotiate. Fair wages called us on Thursday and we started talking but Human Resources Directors were not there so the meeting came to an end. So based on that we asked our workers to resume work while we continue negotiations with fair wages on Thurday,” Peter Lumor said in an interview.
The Teacher and Educational Workers Union began the strike to demand the resolution of wide inequalities between the salaries of Senior and junior staff.
In a statement when TEWU commenced its strike, it said “Since Fair Wages and Salaries Commission have not been fair with us and have failed to carry out its part of the agreement after the submission of the committee’s report since June 2015, the union held a press conference on 10th December 2015, giving Fair Wages and Salaries Commission up to December 2015 ending to implement the said decision.”
The statement further stated that, as of Monday, 18th January 2016 when strike begun, the decisions have not been implemented by Fair wages and Salaries Commission leaving them with no option than to advise ourselves.
TEWU is expected to continue with its negotiation with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on Thursday, 28th January 2016.
