Many sectors of the economy across the country this morning January, 20th 2016 were forced to halt operations in some cases partially following organized Labour’s nationwide demonstration over increased prices of utility, energy sector levies and taxes.
Today’s demonstration will be followed by a nationwide strike action by all labour unions this Friday.

Citi Business News’ Norvan Acquah – Hayford who visited some companies who have members in the labor union says some companies had closed while others were still working.
‘At the Adabraka branch of Merchant bank as well as the GRA office in the same area it was business as usual however at Rana Motors at the Graphic road the company was closed because majority of the workers are members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU)’.
The Labor union has over 15 member unions including the Maritime and Dockworkers’ Union (MDU), Public Utility Workers Union, Timber and Wood Workers Union, Communication Workers Union, Ghana Mine Workers Union, Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Union OF Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF).
Meanwhile the National Chairman of UNICOF Alex Nyarko in an interview with Citi Business News said they could not fully take part in the demonstration due to its impact on the member companies who are mostly private.
