A 60-year-old pork dealer in Ehi in Volta Region might spend months in prison for torturing a dog if he failed to pay a court fine of GH¢300.00 (Three Hundred Ghana Cedis).
Mr Nyaletashie Deku, was on Friday convicted and sentenced by the Dzodze District Magistrate Court in a case of cruelty to animals.
The man was indicted for intentionally setting a trap for a dog belonging to his neighbor Mr Stevens Attachi on August 16, 2015.
According to the prosecution, on the said date, the accused set up a metal trap at his joint which caught and severed the animal.
The dog after several hours of screaming in the trap was rescued by a nephew of the owner.
Mr Deku who pleaded not guilty to the charges was slapped with the fine, liable to 5 months imprisonment on failure to pay.
The court also ordered Deku to compensate the dog and the owner with an amount of GH¢500.00 each.
The court in its concluding remarks after the judgment said Deku’s conviction would serve as deterrent to those who infringe on the rights of animals in the country.
