The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested some persons believed to be behind yesterday`s shooting incident at Nyinahine
In October last year, the Chief of Nyanahine, Nana Amampene Twum Boateng II and three others were tried for the murder of the local priest, but were subsequently acquitted by the Nkawie Circuit Court.
Following this ruling, a group of angry youth yesterday fired indiscriminate shots into the Chief’s palace in an attempt kill him.
Police say the young men were hired to confront police following acts of violence on Sunday, when some young men, numbering about 10, stormed the palace of the chief in the Atwima Mponua district.
The youth fired sporadic gunshots within the palace for about two hours, before vandalising and setting fire to some regalia and other property kept there.
Reports indicate the chief, who has been on the throne for 15 years, was not in the palace at the time of the siege following advice from the police.
When police appeared on the scene at the chief’s palace, the young men fled to a forest, known to be their hideout, with the police giving chase.
When the police followed them into the forests, the young men opened fire on the police resulting in a full blown gun fight.
The Police returned fire killing the leader and wounding others members of the gang.
In an interview with Citi News, the District Police Commander of Nyinahene, DSP Frederick Mensah said a number of the men have been arrested following the gunfight but he declined to give details.
He futher appealed to hospitals in the area to turn in anyone who reported with gunshot wounds for treatment as they were likely to be part of the gang.
DSP Frederick Mensah said, “I want to plead to all the hospitals around this area… in case somebody come there with any bullet wound, they should quickly inform us for us to come for him.”
