The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Eric Afful has been elected as Member of Parliament for the Amenfi West Constituency in the Western Region.
Eric Afful polled 15,809 votes representing 52.64 percent while his main contender who represented the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Derkye had 13,076 votes representing 43.54 percent.
The Electoral Commission held a by-election in the area on Tuesday following the death of the NDC MP John Gyatua.
The election was contested by four political parties comprising the NDC, NPP, PPP and UFP.
Abraham Kwadwo Buadee, who stood on the ticket of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) came third polling 1,032 of total valid votes cast representing 3.44 percent and Elvis Adjei, on the United Front Party’s (UFP) ticket had only 113 votes representing a 0.38 percent.
At the end of the elections, 531 total votes were rejected. A total of 62,364 registered voters were expected to cast their votes but less than half that number
Delivering his victory speech, the newly elected Eric Afful promised to continue to work to better the lives of the people in his constituency.
He said “I thank you all for staying behind me but as I have become the MP, I will do my best to bring development for this country, specifically the people of Wassa Amenfi West. I will do my best to continue the unfinished works of my predecessor for this constituency.”
Prior to the election, the NPP accused the NDC of vote buying in the constituency.
The NPP alleged that the NDC visit homes during the evenings and distribute fertilisers, machetes, among other goodies but the NDC refuted the claims.
