The Association of Health Services Administrators, Ghana (AHSAG) is calling on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Health Service, to rectify the inequalities of compensation in the health sector since the inception of the single spine salary structure.
President of the Association, Albert Asiedu-Ofei made this passionate appeal at a three day annual conference of the association in Winneba in the Central Region.
According to him, members of management receive equal salaries with all clinical staff with the exception of the medical superintendents in the hospitals.
Mr. Asiedu-Ofei says this situation undermines the supervisory role expected to be played by hospital administrators.
“In all public institutions including health facilities, there are clear distinctions in the compensation packages for the management and staff. Management as collective are fairly compensated for the responsibility placed on them which obviously differs from other staff. For instance, the directors of the teaching hospitals enjoy a compensation scheme which does not discriminate between professions hence the director of medical services, director of technical services and the director of administration, are all placed in the same salary band; a similar situation pertains at the national and regional levels of the Ghana Health Service”.
“However, the situation is quite different when one considers hospitals within the Ghana Health Service. Management members of GHS hospitals, with the exception of medical officer in charge, that’s the Medical Superintendent, receive the same remuneration as their colleagues who are not part of management. We therefore call on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Health Service and the GHS Council to rectify this inequality in compensation amongst the management teams occasioned by the implementation of the single spine salary structure”.
