A police station at Bakaano, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region, has been attacked by some youth in the area.
The youth who are supposedly drug peddlers and users, wearing masks, were reacting to the arrest of their colleagues, one of whom died later in police cells.
They thus attacked the station and assaulted an officer leaving him unconscious, and also vandalized police vehicles at the station.
[contextly_sidebar id=”DSLYMfk0S8QYwOyeMjNkHJrA7TCcWZxP”]Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Central Regional Police commander, DCOP Ransford Ninson, said the attacks were linked to the “Father Christmas Operation” carried out on Thursday November 19, during which 37 people were arrested for various offenses.
According to him, one of the suspects arrested on the day of the operation fell ill in police custody and was taken to hospital for medical care but died after a few hours.
This he says angered the youth who mobilized and attacked the police station.
DCOP Ransford Ninson however noted that calm has returned to the area as attempts are being made to apprehend those who attacked the station.
“At the moment, the place is calm, but the police are still trying to locate those people who went and attacked the police station, vandalized the vehicles and beat up the policeman.”
He said one person has been arrested in connection with the assault and vandalism and is currently in police custody, whiles the assaulted police officer is receiving treatment at the Central Regional Hospital.
Meanwhile a resident in the area has told Citi News that the man died in cells because he was severely beaten by the police when he was arrested three days ago, a situation that angered “the wee smokers” who also decided to assault the policemen by going to the police station with cutlasses and other weapons.
