1. Bacon contains a lot of bad fat
One of the reasons that bacon tastes so juicy is the huge amount of fat that it contains, and to make matters worse, that fat is mostly the bad kind of fat that causes cholesterol and blocks up the arteries. Just one ounce of bacon contains a whopping 30 milligrams of the cholesterol that can lead to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
2. Bacon contains loads of salt
Just a single slice of bacon contains around 200 milligrams of sodium, so, if you eat five slices of bacon in a day, you are already half way to your maximum recommended daily intake of salt of 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. If you eat too much salt, you increase your risk of developing high blood pressure and heart diseases.
3. Bacon has been linked to lung cancer
It is now becoming accepted that any processed meat, including bacon, can lead to a greater risk of certain types of cancer. Researchers, who published their findings in the journal Epidemiology, found a direct correlation between the consumption of processed meats and the incidences of lung cancer, in both men and women.
4. It could lead to lower sperm count in men
If you are trying for a baby, then you might want to tell your man to cut down on the bacon sandwiches, because eating too much processed meat could be lowering his sperm count. When researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health did an analysis of men’s sperm samples, they found lower sperm counts in the samples provided by men that eat a lot of processed meat.
5. Bacon contains harmful nitrates
Meats that have been cured, like bacon, contain nitrates, which are used as a preservative and that improve the flavour of the meat. If you have high levels of nitrates in your diet, that can lead to hardening of the arteries and damage to the blood vessels. Nitrates have also been linked to the development of diabetes.
6. Bacon and other processed meats increase your risk of dying young
Eating lots of processed meat will also increase your chances of dying young. In one study, which was published in the medical journal BMC Medicine, researchers found that eating processed meats like bacon increased the chances of people dying young by as much as 44%.
7. It can cause allergic reactions
The preservatives that are often used in bacon can also trigger allergic reactions and be the cause of asthma attacks in people who suffer with asthma. Some experts advise asthmatics and people who are sensitive to food allergies to avoid bacon altogether.
8. Bacon is likely to have come from factory farmed pigs
Bacon is relatively cheap and that is because most bacon is made from factory farmed pigs. Even if you are not concerned about animal welfare, you might want to be concerned about the effect that some farming methods have on your food, because factory farmed meat will contain more antibiotics and other artificial additives that can be harmful to human beings.
9. It could increase your risk of developing diabetes
Eating too much processed meat could significantly increase your risk of developing diabetes. Research that was published in the journal Science Daily demonstrated that a diet that was high in bacon and other processed meats could increase the risk of diabetes by 19%.
10. Bacon can trigger inflammatory bowel disease
Eating too much meat, bacon included, alters the balance of microorganisms living in the gut, which can trigger inflammatory bowel disease in just two days. The recent World Health organisation warning concurs with this evidence that red meat, and processed meat like bacon in particular, could indeed be very bad for your health. Whilst eating the occasional rasher of bacon does not pose any great health risk, if you are eating a bacon sandwich for breakfast every day, you might well want to consider switching to something else.
