As the filing of nominations for the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) November 7 parliamentary and presidential primaries ends on Thursday September 10, it is emerging that the Northern Region may have recorded the highest number of aspirants.
Mion, one of the keenly contested constituencies, has seven aspirants in the race.
They are Mohammed Abdul Aziz, Dr. Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu, the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Mu-Awiya Zakaria, Bawa Abdul Jalil, Alhassan Adam, Munkayila King Zakari and Prince Ibrahim Tanko.
Mohammed Abdul Aziz has already submitted his nomination forms and promised a decent campaign.
“I will ensure a decent campaign in Mion and I will not use any insolent words on anybody because my focus is to win the parliamentary primary and I am sure that after the primary, we will still have a united NDC that will retain power for NDC and retain power for President Mahama so that we will continue all the good works that we are doing as a government.”
[contextly_sidebar id=”Os8DCRoh9v0zRl6jI0wWnr4gsmZ1AXYN”]He told Citi News that the Mion constituency needs a visionary leader like him to secure the seat for the NDC in 2016.
“It is my belief that I am the only candidate who can win the seat for the NDC without any doubt and I am the only person who can facilitate the development of our people.”
He opined that the Mion constituents were tired of the incumbent MP, Dr. Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu who is seeking re-election for the fourth time.
“I have two main motives for aspiring for the office of Parliament for the constituency called Mion: first of all I want to secure the seat for the NDC and secondly I want to ensure the rapid development of the constituency.”
Some NDC supporters in the constituency say the party risk losing the seat in 2016 with the incumbent MP, Dr. Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu.
They therefore called for change and urged the Mion Electoral College to vote massively for Mohammed Abdul Aziz.
The constituency Secretary, Alidu Inusah, implored the parliamentary aspirants and their followers to be civil on their campaign platforms. He said the NDC could not afford to lose the Mion seat to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016.
