The Bimbilla Taribabu Butchers gate has accused the government of bias towards the regent of the area in the dispute.
The Secretary of the Butchers Gate, Fuseini Yakubu told Citi News that government failure to adopt a more neutral position on the matter has resulted in their inability to resolve it.
[contextly_sidebar id=”VF3pGtYQko600V3Zuq71AHK7Li1LLorr”]About 19 people were killed and several properties destroyed in clashes after the regent accused the butchers of failing to observe some traditions.
Some butchers allegedly refused to present a portion of their meat which weighs 2.5 pounds to the Regent setting off the clashes.
The butchers have since returned to work after police and the military restored calm in the area, however the regent insists he will reject any attempts to disrespect their tradition.
“If you look at the whole process, we are saying that government did not handle this issue well and they have taken the side of the regent,” he said.
“Three of the suspects have been arrested. The rest are roaming free in Bimbilla. If you look at the position [of government] deciding to visit one side even when this issue started it is clear [that there is some bias].”
Regent indicted
Meanwhile, a Police report on the clashes indicted the Regent of Bimbilla, Nyilinboligu-Naa Andani Dasana.
According to the report presented in a Tamale District Court, the Regent’s attempt to ban three butchers from using the Bimbila Abattoir triggered the clashes.
However, the Regent has dismissed the claims.
