The Upper East Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO) Alfred Saavog has disclosed that his outfit has commenced assessments of costs for the damage farms after the spillage of the Bagre Dam.
The spillage of the Bagre Dam has affected farmers who cultivate close to the White Volta in the Talensi, Bawku West and Binduri districts, submerging their farms.
[contextly_sidebar id=”ifrhwdBQTDgCeozPPVVafvnNOvyzPUOs”]According Mr Saavog, the essence of the assessment is necessary to get some relief materials to support the farmers.
Speaking to Citi News after an assessment exercise at Pwalugu in the Talensi district, Mr. Saavog said “the assessment will tell us the extent of damage, the assessment will also tell us what the farmers will need and within one week NADMO would have had a clear estimates of the cost of damage to farmers and that NADMO is in the position to supply relief material to people affected the assessment.”
Though no lives have been lost as a result of the spillage, farmers and residents along the affected areas have been cautioned to suspend all such activities until otherwise directed.
The spillage however, is expected to increase the volume of water in the Akosombo dam for generation of electricity.
In July, the engineering department at the Akosombo Dam hinted, it had put in a request for the shut down of three turbines of the dam.
This follows the consistent drop in the water levels in the dam.
