Residents of Tema Newtown were awoken by tragedy early Monday morning when two young sisters met their untimely death in a fire that burned the wooden structure they were sleeping in to the ground.
Emmanuella Quainor, aged four, and Gifty Quainor, aged 14, and nine other relatives were residing in the structure when the fire began around 2 am.
It is believed that a candle, which had been lit due to a power outage in the area, was the source of the fire.
The four-bedroom structure, the drinking spot it was attached to, and all of their contents were completely destroyed by the fire. According to the Assistant Chief Fire Office, he and his officers had difficulty reaching the scene due the road being blocked by canopies that had been mounted for a funeral.
The outfit discovered the girls’ bodies upon arrival. The Police have since deposited the bodies in a mortuary.
Mr. Harrison Tetteh, a relative of the victims, said he woke up when he felt the intense heat from the fire.
He managed to wake up and lead six of the structure’s other residents outside to safety, but was unable to reach the children in the other room.
