Supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) engaged in bloody clashes in Talensi as voters elect a new Parliamentary candidate in a by- election.
Voting is currently ongoing in the constituency to elect a Member of Parliament (MP) to replace Robert Mosore, who resigned as MP for the area after he was enskinned paramount Chief of Tongo.
[contextly_sidebar id=”T2SUYuabmelIRudNU4mON3384jyOAwko”]Citi News Upper East Regional correspondent Frederick Awuni who was at the scene said “there is a serious confrontation between NDC Azoka boys and the NPP boys in the Talensi constituency so far as the by-election is concerned.”
According to him, “A V8 vehicle with registration number GN 181211 which belongs to the NDC has also been damaged.”
“They vandalized the vehicles and currently the military and Police are here to ensure calm but it seems to be getting off hand here and the boys are taking control,” Awuni reported.
Freddie Blay attacked
The First Vice Chair of the NPP Freddie Blay and the National Treasurer of the NPP, Kwabena Abankwa Yeboah were early on also attacked in the constituency.
The incident occurred when the Regional Minister and his entourage visited the polling station to monitor the election.
He claims his attackers were led by the Northern Regional NDC Chair, Chief Sofo Azoka.
AK-47 rifle, other weapons intercepted
In related development the Police in Talensi have intercepted an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, dagger, axe and other dangerous weapons in the area.
The weapons were intercepted when the Police mounted a check point at Tongo, the capital of Talensi to conduct a random search of vehicles entering the town.
