The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has jumped to the defense of the headmistress of the Kukurantumi Presby School describing her request for chalk as a nothing out of the ordinary.
The Public Relation Officer of the Directorate, Emmanuel Asiedu Acheampong, justified the request saying, the headmistress should not be blamed for asking what the school needed.

The Second Lady’s harsh response to the request was widely criticized
It however prompted individuals, groups and even the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to donate large quantities of chalk to the school.
According to the GES, the conduct of the headmistress is being investigated because her school had early on been provided with 42 boxes of chalk.
The acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GES, Reverend Jonathan Bettey mentioned that available documents show that the school had recently been provided with 42 packs of chalk.
But Mr. Acheampong in an interview with Citi News said there could be a number of factors which may have caused the headmistress to make that request.
“That incident where the school authorities had to probably make that request might probably depend on some factors beyond their control,” he said.
The Eastern Regional GES PRO explained that it may have happened that “in the course of distribution, the item may not have been available at the time they needed it.”
Mr. Acheampong remarked that it is common knowledge that the nation has “inadequacies in all sectors so let’s say if they requested for 10 boxes and they got 6, it will get to a point where probably there will be that need to request for more.”
“We don’t run away from the facts that sometimes, the things are inadequate,” he stressed.
