The Rapid Response team of the Tamale Police literally saved the life of an official of a non-governmental organization, after some of the returnees from Old Fadama, nearly beat him up.
They accused the official, Yussif Hamidu of attempting to abscond with GH¢160,000 stimulus package meant for their upkeep.
About 250 returnees were transported to the Tamale Jubilee park after their homes were recently demolished at Old Fadama by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
According to them, Yussif Hamidu promised to give each repatriate GH¢200 upon arrival in Tamale.
They said Yussif Hamid later changed position on the supposed GH¢160, 000 causing the incensed returnees to attack him.
The Police rapidly intervened and calm down tensions.
One of them said, “I saw the money with my two eyes” adding that the man was forced to count the money but “before we reached Kintampo, he said they didn’t give him money at all.”
Yussif Hamid has however described the allegation as a palpable lies.
“I told them that we are not financiers, we are a local NGO and we have sympathy to carry them to Tamale and SADA will support them.”
A high ranking officer from SADA, Dr. Emmanuel Atariwini promised the repatriates of handsome packages to continue to their final destinations.
“We know the difficulties you have all being through and we recognize the challenges: today is a Monday and we have awoken this morning to have this problem and we want to assure you that this is our problem.”
“We are taking steps to resolve it so that you can all get home quickly so as the police Commander has said here I want to take leave and get back to the office, get to the bank and then we will come back and deal with you.”
“Now that we already have the list I think is straightforward so we will deal with this matter and all of you be patient we have accepted the responsibility and we will ensure that you will all get home safely,” Dr. Emmanuel promised.
