The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has kicked against calls for the dissolution of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) following the massive leakage of some Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers.

GNAT argues that there is currently no evidence linking the leakage of the papers to the activities of the board.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Ydqg5QZ6cnHl0k2RccIw41IAnKJW4Gkm”]The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) last week blamed the board of WAEC for the leakage and called for its dissolution.

The association also demanded that the Head of Ghana National Office of WAEC, Rev Nii Nmai Ollennu be dismissed.

According to them, the Council has failed Ghanaian teachers and students by failing to “bring WAEC up to speed with 21st century virtual securities.”

In an interview with Citi News, the acting General Secretary of GNAT, Veni Demanya rather called for thorough investigations to unravel the circumstances that led to the leakage of the papers.

“There is the need for thorough investigation because we have intances over the years where there have been leakages so we should go down and chek if it is the people who set the questions, those who go to pick the type of questions, those who print or type the questions,” he said.

He admitted that GNAT was not happy that some examination questions were leaked to the students which occasioned the need to cancel some papers which had already been written.

Nonetheless, he insisted that there is no direct linkage between the activities of the board and how the papers may have leaked.

“As to the board being dissolved, I don’t see the linkage between what happned and the board,” he said.

Veni Demanya pointed out that NAGRAT’s demands were misplaced because “what they are asking means that if something happens in the country and because the President is the President of Ghana, he should step aside…we should look at it very well.”

Meanwhile, WAEC has appealed to Ghanaians to put emotions aside and be circumspect in their criticism of the examination council.

It has scheduled June 29 and 30, 2015 for the cancelled papers to be written.
