JOSPONG Group Of Companies has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly to enforce the laws on sanitation.
They want all residential facilities to have refuse bins in order to have a coordinated approach to waste collection.
The call was made by the group at the commissioning of ZOOMPAK Waste Transfer Station at Teshie in Accra.
The station, the first of its kind in West Africa will serve as the critical consolidation link in making waste management much more efficient in the country.
The Chairman of JOSPONG group Dr. Joseph Agyepong, also announced the company’s plans to distribute 2 million free waste bins by the end of 2016.
He explained that this was in line with the company`s quest to create a healthy environment for Ghanaians and also maintain proper sanitation in the country.
The Vice President, Kwesi Amissah Arthur who was the Special Guest of hounor at the event charged Ghanaians to be responsible for managing their waste.
He explained that while government is investing heavily in waste management and hygiene they should be responsible to adhere to strict hygienic practices.
Zoompak will serve as a transit point for waste companies to discharge solid waste.
The station will also make solid waste collection more efficient and reduce overall cost of production of waste contractors in the metropolis.
The station will handle up to 1300 ton of waste daily, over 50 % of the total waste generated in Accra. The company has plans to replicate a similar facility at Achimota.
The facility also includes Hospital Waste Management. This section will treat and manage all medical waste generated from health care facilities.
