Following the floods and fire which claimed scores lives in Accra on Wednesday, Pope Francis has sent a message expressing his heartfelt condolences to Ghanaians for the losses they have suffered.
About 150 people are reported to have died in the floods and the fire which razed the GOIL fuel station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to the ground.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue services remain at the scene going through the rubble and debris and President Mahama has said that the official toll will be announced only after the rescue efforts end.
In a message relayed through the Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the pontiff prayed for “divine gifts of consolation and strength upon those who mourn and upon all who have been affected by this tragedy.”
‘A test for Ghana’
Various heads of State on the African continent have also expressed similar sentiments to Ghanaians including the President of Togo Faure Gnassingbe, who paid a visit to the scene of the incident.
He described the disaster as a test for Ghana but expressed his optimism that Ghana will come through the situation successfully.
