The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has cautioned independent broadcasters in the country to be circumspect in their reportage of the unfortunate attack on the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adam Mahama, which led to his untimely death.
[contextly_sidebar id=”xFm0qVbPhb3i0X3F2rSDpEu0gP36hqjs”]In a statement issued by the Executive Council of the Association ahead of its interaction with broadcasters in the three Northern Regions, it condemned the cowardly act.
Adam Mahama died on Thursday at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital after he acid was poured on him by some two assailants.
One person has been arrested in connection with the matter and is assisting the Police with investigations.
The leadership of the NPP has admonished party member to desist from taking the law into their own hands but rather, stay united and allow the security agencies to conclude investigations into the matter.
GIBA has asked its members to be mindful of the simmering tensions surrounding the case and not allow their platforms to be used to further any parochial political or tribal interest.
“Let us be mindful of the potential security threat that this attack poses in the region and not provide our platforms for any self -serving group to exploit it. We have our Code of Conduct on political reportage as a guide,” the statement added.
GIBA is also calling on the security services, especially the Ghana Police Service, to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book.
