The Korle bu Teaching Hospital is presently struggling to treat hundreds of patients who visit the facility daily following the exit of about 150 medical doctors.
The doctors, who were undertaking their one-year housemanship worked under resident doctors and consultants mainly at the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD).

One of the patients, Comfort Yaboi, a middle-aged woman told Citi News she reported at the facility as early as 4:30am. She was there for her regular medical check-up, but had to wait for hours before seeing a doctor.
“We were told to put our cards in a box. We have done that. Now we are waiting for them to start attending to us,” she said.
Others, like Betty Quainoo had come earlier.
“We have been sitting for a long time. They came to us at about 7:10 and told us to put our folders on the table,” she said, adding that patients who did not show any signs of serious health condition were advised to return home and come back later.
For Yaa Boafo however, she had come only about an hour earlier, but still had to go through the same predicament.
“I came with my mum. We got here at about 6am. When we got here, there were people already waiting. The nurse started calling out our names, but someone told her to stop. We asked the nurse what was happening here, but she said nothing to us,” Yaa said.
The problem at the hospital will persist until new doctors are posted to the facility.
Citi News’ efforts to get a response from the hospital’s authorities on how they intend to address problem were unsuccessful.
