Three people have been confirmed dead after inhaling poisonous gas in a mining pit in Gbane in the Upper East Region.

The three were reportedly collecting debris from the pit after a blast.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Shaanxi mining Company Limited Maxwell Wooma told Citi News that the incident happened on “Thursday morning around 5am.”
“…when two groups of our underground cleaners numbering 17 were underground in one of our vertical shafts, they were caught up with smoke apparently emanating from the blast that we have taken in one of the drive.”
He said: “immediately we had to rescue the 17 people that were underground cleaning the pit…and gave them some first aid treatment and hurriedly conveyed them to the regional hospital in Bolgatanga.”
Maxwell Wooma said unfortunately, upon arrival at the regional hospital “we lost two people yesterday and early this morning one passed on.”
He added that they have initiated full-scale investigations to ascertain the cause of the problem adding that they have also reported the incident to inspectorate division of the Minerals Commission.
