Monthly sales of new cars in the UK reached their highest level this century in March, according to industry figures.
Last month, dealers across the country sold 492,774 new vehicles – 6% up on the same period last year.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) said that made March 2015 the best month for sales since the twice-yearly number plate changes were introduced in 1999.
Car registrations in the UK have risen for 37 consecutive months while car production is expected to exceed pre-recession levels this year.
The best-selling car in the UK this year so far is the Ford Fiesta – with 27,034 sold last month alone.
The SMMT said the good figures were down to a combination of new technologies, low interest rates and attractive finance packages.
Mike Hawes, its chief executive, said “The challenge for a new government and industry will be to maintain this momentum and to strengthen Britain’s manufacturing capabilities through continued investment, innovation and policies which maintain our global competitiveness.
“Whatever the general election result, the new government must keep up the commitment to the sector which is delivering at home and abroad.”
Meanwhile, high-end car maker Mercedes Benz saw its highest monthly sales ever in March.
The German company reported selling 183,467 cars worldwide last month, up 15.7% on the same month last year.
