Two suspected criminals have reportedly escaped from a Police cell in Asiwa in the Ashanti Region.
[contextly_sidebar id=”qanjImk3i2aKeVGtBcPANGodG6zOlLsA”]District Chief Executive of Bosome Freho, Kwame Adarkwa, who confirmed the incident to Citi News explained that the suspects were arrested on Wednesday for their involvement in illegal mining activities and the theft of some excavators.
But they escaped Sunday after using some tools to break the metal bars in the cells.
District Chief Executive of Bosome Freho, Kwame Adarkwa said an emergency District Security meeting will be held to address the issue.
“I took them [suspects] myself to the Police station. What I heard on Monday from the district commander is that they have cut down a pipe in the ventilation of the building and bolted away. We have reported to the region and have reported to the appropriate quarters and investigation is going on.”
Meanwhile the DCE has blamed the jailbreak on the negligence of the Police Commander and his subordinates at the Asiwa Police Station saying when he heard the issue and rushed to the Police station, “there was nobody there, the doors were opened, the offices are opened.”
“They informed one of my drivers that someone was bringing food to one of the prisoners and there was hacksaw blade in the food. Why didn’t you arrest the one who brought the food?” he fumed.
This is the third of such an incident in a month.
In the first incident, 7 suspects escaped in a cell at Denu in the Volta Region while 2 escaped in Tepa in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday.
Four of the suspects in the Denu case have been re-arrested while the rest are still at large.
Recent cell breaks not a sign of armageddon
The Police Public Affairs Director Superintendent Cephas Arthur had in an earlier interview with Citi News said it will be needless for Ghanaians to worry about the recent cell and jailbreaks since the trend has been in existence for some time and will probably continue in the subsequent years.
Supt Cephas Arthur noted that there is no reason for Ghanaians to “throw their hands in the air and cry Armageddon” since the phenomenon might never be eradicated.
“Nothing is going wrong. This is trivial escape. Trivial escape has been with us since time immemorial. This is a phenomenon that has plagued the world and we may never be able to eradicate it, just manage it,” he said.
