A Peace and Security analyst and a Research fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Dr Ken Ahorsu is advocating that the assets of the Director General of Human Resource Development of the Ghana Police Service, COP Patrick Timbilla be frozen.
[contextly_sidebar id=”fOU1A7SbDquJVNNb42DoMP8h3Xb5v3pB”]His call comes in the wake of a revelation by interior Minister Mark Woyongo that the accounts of Mr Timbilla had been frozen.
There are growing allegations that the interdicted officer has over a million Ghana cedis lodged in two private accounts.
However shying away from confirming same the Interior Minister indicated the accounts of the officer in the meantime have been frozen.
But Dr Ken Ahorsu said the action should stretch to all known assets of Mr Timbilla so an impartial investigation is assured.
He explained that “it is in the right direction if they are frozen because one of the ways of finding out if he has illegally made any money from this scam recruitment is to find out if he has an amount of money which is outrageous or not commiserative with what his salary or earnings. So I think it is proper that his accounts are frozen for the time being.”
Dr. Ken Ahorsu also dismissed suggestions that the board that has been set up to investigate the matter cannot do an independent work adding that “there are lawyers involve, there are policemen involve and there are officials from the Ministry of Interior involve so I think this is representative enough.”
“More so we should be aware that a very senior officer has been interdicted and those who are on this board equally have their neck on the chopping board should they do a shoddy work.”
Why Timbilla was indicted
Hundreds people turned up at various Police training institutions for recruitment but it turned out to be a scam.
Eight persons were subsequently arrested.
The Director General of Police Human Resource and Administration, COP Patrick Timbilla was also indicted because the special taskforce which was set up to investigate the recruitment scam are said to have seen text message evidence and other correspondence between him and the victims.
The Police Public Affairs Director, DCOP David Ampah Benin confirmed this said “the special taskforce presented its interim report which implicated the Commissioner…we have taken this action to enable the investigation team and the special taskforce to have full access to the Commissioner and then for investigations to continue,” he explained.
