The demolition of illegal structures at Agblobloshie in Accra, specifically at an area popularly referred to as Sodom and Gomorrah, has entered its third day.
The exercise is expected to last another day as city authorities vow to clear all illegal structures located at the said area.
Meanwhile thousands of people have been rendered homeless due to the exercise.
The Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander ACP Timothy Bonga told Citi News last Saturday that the exercise is expected to last for four days.
He stated that the hundreds of police officers deployed at the demolishing site were to provide security for the operation to go on smoothly.
When Citi News visited the site yesterday afternoon, around 2pm, four bulldozers were on site busily pulling down the marked structures for demolition.
So far, over a thousand structures have been demolished and as the exercise enters its third day, more structures are expected to be pulled down.
When Citi News spoke to some of the affected residents, they expressed their anger at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, AMA for not given them prior notice before invading their “homes.”
Others however admitted that the authorities had issued them notices before the demolishing.
Officials at the AMA are tightlipped on the details of the operation but the demolishing of illegal structures at “Sodom and Gomorrah” has been on the drawing board for many years.
The slum which is reported to be hosting over 60,000 people is virtually consumed in filth and a massage stench.
The political will to relocate residents at the slum has been lacking over the years.
