The Police administration has dismissed accusations of double standards in dealing with persons arrested in connection with the recent recruitment scam.
Some say the Police prosecuting the civilians involved in the case while their indicted officers are still on interdiction.
[contextly_sidebar id=”dLLyfhHceUCcuE4gJcaBAUcnwehx6KQk”]On Eyewitness News, the Police Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Cephas Arthur clarified that there are two separate cases of recruitment fraud which is currently being dealt with.
According to him, there were ongoing investigations into an earlier recruitment fraud before the February 28 recruitment scam hit the Police Service.
Therefore, the civilians who were indicted in the earlier recruitment scam are the ones currently in court.
“There is no double standard here…We are already in court in connection with the civilians who were found to be behind the earlier recruitment frauds which have eventually some connection to this recent scam which has gotten some police officers involved,” he argued.
Supt. Arthur stressed that “it looks as if it’s the same case but there are two instances of personnel involved. The first instance, the people involved are in court…”
He indicated that the officers of the service who are still on interdiction over the enlistment scam have been investigated and their dockets will be forwarded to the Attorney General for advice.
Asked when the findings of the investigation team will be made public, Supt. Arthur said that can only be authorized by the Police Council and not the Police administration.
He stated that the Police Council ordered the investigation into the case “so I think at the appropriate time, the Police Council will direct the public discussion of the details.”
Some 14 individuals including three Police Officers have been arrested in connection with what is considered the largest Police recruitment scam to hit the service after over 100 men and women turned up at various Police Training schools for enlistment into the service.
Three out of the 14 suspects are Police officers including the Director General of Human Resource Development of the Ghana Police Service, COP Patrick Timbila.
Based on the findings of the investigative team, the Police Council has ordered that the three officers should remain on interdiction.
The Council has also recommended an internal disciplinary action “be initiated into the conduct of the officers…without prejudice to any criminal prosecutions that may be directed by the Attorney-General’s Office against them.”
