The New Patriotic Party(NPP) has declared its support for the ‘Yabr3 Demo’ which is scheduled to take place on February, 25, 2015 in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The ‘Yabr3 Demo’ demonstration, according to the NPP, has been triggered by the same reasons for the party’s “w)n gbo” demonstration which was held in Accra on Wednesday.
[contextly_sidebar id=”7HWXvXBkDbbetNUOe5ituBrzTuzTxELZ”]A press statement signed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong noted that “the NPP wishes to announce to the entirety of Ghanaians that it endorses the ‘Yabr3 Demo’ which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday February 25, 2015 by the Movement for Change, a pressure group.”
The party’s General Secretary urged members of the party, civil society and artisanal groups to join the demonstration since the “economic gains made in our country have been eroded over the past 6 years of the NDC rule.”
He said Ghanaians “continue to suffer unprecedented economic hardship coupled with an unending power crisis.”
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Kwabena Agyepong clarified that the purpose of the demonstration is also aimed at “ identifying with the frustration of Ghanaians”
“It is important that people convey to government their frustrations so we are encouraging the ordinary people, the capenters, the welders, hairdessers who have lost earnings to join the demonstration, “ he stated.
“We believe that the demand for better governance and accountability must continue unabated,”Agyepong added.
The demonstration, if successfully held, will be the second protest against the worsening power crisis.
Gov’t commentary on ‘wɔn gbo’ demo ‘insensitive’
In a related development, Mr. Agyepong has described government officials’ comments on the party’s ‘wɔn gbo’ demonstration as “insensitive” and “uncaring”.
The mass protest attracted thousands of Ghanaians but some of officials in government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have sought to downplay the impact of demonstration and described it as unjustified and uncalled for.
The Minister of Power in an interview on Joy FM said sarcastically that those who participated in the protest were only involved in a “keep fit” exercise.
The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Kofi Adams also criticised the demonstration, insisting the NPP is responsible for the current energy crisis.
However responding to the critics on the Citi Breakfast Show last Thursday, Mr Agyepong said: “This government has simply been incompetent. Now they are showing they are insensitive and uncaring with the comments coming from their Ministers.”
