The General Secretary of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), Stephen Okudzeto has promised that transport fares will be reduced by Monday, January 12.

His comment follows refusal by some GPRTU members to reduce transport fares despite a reduction in fuel prices by five percent.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, Mr Okudzeto explained that the delay in effecting the new fares “is not deliberate” saying, “the new list left our offices late yesterday evening and it takes time for these documents to get to them.”
Though he was angry with the drivers refusing to cut their fares, he was hopeful all their members will implement the new fares adding that “those who are saying that they are not going to reduce, I don’t think they are GPRTU members because anytime there is a directive our members do comply and they are also aware that in case they refuse to comply they would be sanctioned.”
He further added that, those in the Ashanti, Brong and Central Regions have started implementing the new fares with the exception of those in Greater Accra.
“Greater Accra is very big; we have over 255 branches in Greater Accra alone and we’ve been monitoring the situation. We are told most of the branches in the locals have received the new list and we are sure that they are going to comply,” he explained.
