Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah says the team must be prudent in attack when they play against Algeria on Friday.
Ghana lost its first Group C match of the 2015 AFCON on Monday to Senegal and they will need to get a win against the Desert Foxes to have a chance of going far in the tournament and Mensah is calling on his colleagues to make use of opportunities they get in the match else they risk the same feat as South Africa who lost 3-1 to Algeria after missing so many chances.
” In football, the best way to defend is to attack and we did attack really well in the first half against Senegal but we did not take them. We have to make sure we do better in the next game because we will get chances but we need to punish the opponent.
The same thing happened to South Africa. They got early chances but they did not make them count and they got punished. So, we have to take ours against Algeria,” Mensah told the press.
Mensah is expected to start for Ghana but he could be key in coach Avram Grant’s plans as he has met a few of the Algerian players at club level in the Ligue 1 where Mensah plays for Evian.
Carl Medjani played at Valenciennes last season while Aissa Mandi plays for Metz.
The match kicks off at 4pm on Friday and South Africa and Senegal play at 6pm.
