Oil production and distribution in the country may be affected in the next few days as workers of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) have laid down their tools in solidarity with the dismissed MODEC workers.
According to the workers, MODEC’s action is a clear breach of the law hence their strike to demand the immediate reinstatement of their colleagues.
The workers at TOR as well as Bulk Oil Storage & Transportation Co. Ltd. (BOST) have all joined in the strike which begun on Tuesday morning.
[contextly_sidebar id=”xEXXN9ZFbS09ynbZUY44GizoFT6jxWCq”]One Samuel Quarshie, told Citi News’ correspondent, Elvis Washington that “We want our colleagues at MODEC that were unlawfully dismissed back…we think that it is injustice.”
Another worker, Bernard also explained that, “We are going to Christmas, can you imagine you receiving a letter from you management that you’ve been sacked because you embarked on an action?”
“It’s something that is the right of all workers and by the end of the day you went back to a round table sit down agreed on MoU and only to be told that they don’t want to respect that MoU. If MODEC is not respecting its own MoU then government should also revoke license that has been given to MODEC in the same vain,” he charged.
MODEC sacked some of it’s Ghanaian workers for failing to sign a bond to be of good behavior after negotiations over pay disparity failed.
The remaining 12 Ghanaians working with MODEC, on November 11 also laid down their tools to demand the reinstatement of their colleagues.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations has asked the striking MODEC workers to return to work.
