A labour Analyst, Austin Gamey has described that the demonstration by some workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to compel government to reinstate their former Managing Director as unnecessary.
He said they should have petitioned the president instead of staging the demonstration.
“I appreciate their difficulties but if they had written to the president for instance and say they are appealing to reconsider the decision, that would have been fine. That shows a lot of respect, but to insist and demonstrating and leaving their work like something that have been planned in virtually all the areas is most disturbing,” he said.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Vymxp8IcmyEw9Dy3moVbV0eqrxZRPfKQ”]He opined that the demonstration of the workers have “rather aggravated the situation for the man,” adding that “I think that this is most disturbing and whoever advised that they should do what they are doing did not help matters at all.”
Over 400 workers of ECG demonstrated on Monday, against the removal of their Managing Director (MD), William Hutton Mensah.
Similarly, the Tema Regional office of the ECG last Friday threatened to cause mayhem if the former MD is not reinstated.
But, speaking on the Eyewitness News on Monday, Austin Gamey emphasized that he bears no grudge against William Hutton Mensah, but indicated that such appointments are the sole prerogative of the president.
“There is an appointing authority who appointed him and has now ask him to report somewhere for something else. We must respect our laws, our law is very clear as to who is the appointing authority,” he added.
He further advised the General Secretary of the ECG’s workers union to call his people to order because its an embarrassment to him and his office.
Meanwhile speaking on the same programme, Benedict Kanuse, Union Chairman for the Accra East region of the ECG workers argued that the former MD did a lot for the company hence their action.
“We are not fighting government but what we are asking for is that this man has done a lot. He has a lot to his credit. He has ordered with some lifeline vehecles we can work with without power interruption, he has taken electricity to the doorsteps to our customers by putting up district offices and stores so that they can store materials so that when the have problem, they can solve it quickly. We are saying that this man has done a lot for ECG and that is why we are only pleading with government to reinstate him,” he said.
