Construction workers undertaking the extensive rehabilitation of the Adomi Bridge in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region have laid down their tools.
According to the 59 workers made up of welder fabricators and laborers, the strike is to demand better wages and salaries.
A leader of the Local Union of workers at the site, Isaac Sakyi told Citi News, the were enegaged in salary negotiations with management but the negotiations were terminated.
[contextly_sidebar id=”0AC471JLXGbZYJE79uW2BAViWhTPQ0IQ”]He accused the management of shortchanging the workers saying, “since some of us started work nine months ago, we have been poorly remunerated so we feel cheated.”
According to him, a Labor Consultant working for management had told the striking workers that a bargaining certificate was not available therefore, the negotiations had to be terminated.
But an angry Sakyi asked “if he knew that the bargaining certificate was not ready, why did he allow us to do the previous meetings?”
Sakyi also argued that the absence of a signed document meant the agreement was not effective.
In March this year, the Adomi Bridge was closed down for extensive repair works; a project the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has estimated will cost Ghana €13 million.
Following the closure of the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku, drivers and passengers were faced with various problems in their bid to move to and from the Eastern and the Volta regions of the country.
