The Ghana Police administration has announced plans to start a bank for the service.
This was disclosed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Ahmed Alhasan, on his working visit to Hohoe in the Volta Region.
The Police will be the second major security agency in Ghana to venture into the banking sector after the Ghana Armed Forces also announced a similar plan.
According to the IGP, the Police Bank which would mainly serve Police officers would be part of a grand plan to improve the welfare of personnel.

We have thought of the Police Bank and upgrading the welfare scheme. All these shows your welfare is our concern,” he said.
The IGP said the administration is working hard to better the lives of Police personnel “because I am aware that we are pushing you very hard to work day and night and we are also aware that pushing you thus far your welfare should be paramount in the scheme of affairs.”
In January this year, the Ghana Armed Forces revealed exclusively to Citi News they had initiated processes to acquire a banking license from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
When the Army announced their plans, renowned lawyer Moses Foh Amoaning threatened to sue the security agency. He argued that the Army is not allowed to venture into such commercial activities.
“Let’s look at Article 210 (3) that says that the Armed Forces shall be equipped and maintained to perform their role of defense of Ghana as well as any such function to the development of Ghana as the President may determine.”
It is unclear yet whether the said Article of the constitution also bars the Police Service from such activities.
