After weeks of intensive campaigning, the three candidates vying to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – Nana Akufo-Addo, Alan Kyeremanten and Francis Addai-Nimoh will know their fate today.
over 140,000 party delegates will head to the polls today to elect a flagbearer who will lead the party into the 2016 presidential election.
In all, seven candidates picked up nomination forms to contest the flagbearership position but the number was pruned down to five in a Super Delegates Congress as stipulated in the party’s constitution.
[contextly_sidebar id=”vubezMohVqgBnL6EuzxCMCPunOj6EmGy”]After the Super Delegates’ Congress on August 31, the following candidates made it into the shortlisted five – Nana Akufo-Addo (81.28%), Alan Kyerematen (8.01%), Francis Addai Nimoh (2.85%), Joe Ghartey (2.85%) and Kofi Osei Ameyaw (1.90).
The remaining two, Stephen Asamoah Boateng and Kofi Konadu Apraku were eliminated from the contest for obtaining 1.76 percent and 1.36 percent of the total valid votes cast respectively.
Shortly after, two of the candidates who made into the shortlisted five – Joe Ghartey and Kofi Osei Ameyaw bowed out of the race leaving Akufo-Addo, Kyeremanten and Addai-Nimoh.
There were serveral calls for Kyeremanten and Addai-Nimoh to also step down to allow the two-time presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo to run unopposed.
But the two refused to back down and after weeks of intense campaigning, the three rounded things up on Thursday, October, 16, 2014.
Chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko has however called for peace within the party before, during and after the congress.
