Fisherfolk in the country are appealing to government to reconsider its decision to remove subsidies on petroleum products as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to them, the removal of subsidies on pre-mix fuel will gravely affect their work.
The IMF, after the first round of negotiations with government, announced that petroleum subsidies will be reviewed.

He lamented that such a move if taken will cause phenomenal increases in prices of fish products.
“If the prices of fish goes up, it will affect the public and the fishermen as a whole so all what we want is for the subsidy to be there,” he stated.
The IMF is not the first to appeal to government to remove petroleum subsidies.
The Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) has also warned government against the removal of petroleum subsidies.
The removal, according to ISODEC will worsen the economic conditions of the poor in the country.
