Officials of Zoomlion Ghana Limited on Monday went round some parts of Accra to inspect the rate of work on refuse collection in the capital.
The tour was to monitor progress of work towards keeping Accra clean within the 10-day ultimatum issued by Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur last, week.
Mr. Jacob Mingle, Press Coordinator of the Alliance Waste a subsidiary of Zoomlion who led the tour to 19 dump sites in Accra, expressed satisfaction at work done so far.
The team visited areas like the Mallam-Atta Market, La Wireless, Sodom and Gomorrah, Kokomlemle, and inspected a portion of the Korle Lagoon.
The clean-up exercise is expected to decongest the markets and also clear the capital of filth in the wake of the recent cholera outbreak in Accra.
Accra has been inundated with refuse for some months now with many blaming the lack of landfill sites and government’s debt to waste management companies for the situation.
Pressure on the Kpone landfill site reduced as the newly commissioned Nsumia Waste Disposal facility began operations.
The new site, which has been engineered to contain refuse for the next two years, is to replace the closed Pantang landfill site.
Located within the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, off the Accra-Nsawam highway in the Ga West Municipality, the facility will serve as an alternative solid waste landfill site for residents particularly those in western Accra.
The Kpone landfill site until two weeks ago was the only site receiving garbage from Accra.
